The job skills and duties vary per job listing. As you can see from the sub-categories above there are many types of projects that can be listed and the category names sound very technical but reading between the lines…

The sub-category Advertising could involve anything from Google adWords, link building to craigslist ads.

I need someone to post online advertisements for my company. I have created all of the ads, I just need you to post them online on a daily basis. You must live within the UNITED STATES and have access to a computer around 1-3 pm Pacific time EVERY SINGLE DAY. The work is super easy and all you have to do is post online ads every single day. It should take 45-minutes-to 1.5 hours. Very simple.

Another category that is very popular and growing by the day is Social Media Marketing, SMM. This might sound scary but basically it’s promoting a business through various social media outlets, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, ect. The employer will want you to know what you’re doing so researching some of the latest techniques in SMM will give you a good head start. There are many free resources available on how to search Twitter for targeted users or how to create a Facebook business page that you will be able to easily develop a great skill set for this category.

The Sales and Marketing work at home jobs are a perfect place to start looking for an honest job that you can get paid hourly working form your home. Many outsourcers choose to stay in this category due to the overwhelming amount of job openings.

It’s also very easy to find a ton of free resources on the internet to build expert skills in one of the sub-categories such as social media or search engine optimization.

oDesk is the only outsourcing website that actually has a specific category for Networking and Information system. That doesn’t mean that there is a lack of these jobs, it’s relies mainly on the website that’s listing jobs. For example doing a search at Elance for “network and information systems” brings you a list of over 1,600 available online jobs.

The type of jobs listed in this category are perfect for anyone in this field looking to make some extra income at home or transferring their job completely. There is enough work online for a person with any of the skills listed above to make a permanent switch to working at home exclusively.

The issue arises when a professional network or database administrator becomes “too busy” at their regular job to pursue the idea of working from home. In reality if they took a few hours on the weekend to explore the available work at home opportunities they could be putting in their notice by Monday morning.

Again, I say that you can’t totally dismiss the category because you don’t have a college degree from a technical school or advanced college. There are many jobs posted in the network and information online job category that should not be there AND those are the best ones to interview for. WHY? Because people that are truly qualified for this category of work at home jobs would not be interested in a job that’s setting up link or blog promotion, they would want a more technical, higher paying position.

amazon EC2 configuration and troubleshooting

We recently set up two instances in the amazon EC2 area, and are installing expression engine. We are about 90% there but there are a couple dependencies and/or modules/packages missing that are causing some bugs in our application.

The set up is as follow:
2 ec2 server instances running ubuntu 8.04 (hardy heron)
2 volumes, 1 has apache installed, 1 has mysql and they are each individually mounted on one of the instances

I need you to be able to use the ec2 command line tools to ssh in, and compare the server set up to where the current site location is, and troubleshoot any php based errors that are causing problems in our application

If you do not have extensive experience using ssh and at least limited experience working in the amazon ec2 environment please do not bother applying.

You will also need to adjust your local hosts file to point at the server instance, again, if you don’t know what I am talking about please do not bother applying.

The pay range for this category is very scattered due to the vast range of skills that are desired by the employers. The simpler projects such as the ones shown above will be paying on the lower end versus a job for an experienced account that will pay on the higher scale pay range.

One thing you shouldn’t do is stereotype a job thinking it won’t pay very much due to the skills needed. Many of these employers know that if you have solid work experience with a great reputation your hourly rate will be higher than a less qualified contractor. Many times they are willing to pay the higher rate for an easier and better outcome for both sides.
